NEWS: FG Decided To Stop Linking Phone Lines To NIN

Nigerians have been in a state of confusion because of the rush to comply with the linking of SIM cards with National Identity Number, NIN. The Registration continues among Nigerians. The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has revealed the details of a meeting with the Minister of Communication, the NCC, the NIMC and other concerned stakeholders.

Following some difficulties in complying to this, the FG and NCC amid the struggle on each center to register for their National Identification Number, NIN or link same with their lines have been but to still.

The NIMC in a statement title, ‘Extension of Registration Period and Cancellation of USSD and Verification Fees’, on Monday said, “USSD and verification charges remain suspended during these extensions. ” What’s new is that, apart from the verification charges being cancelled, the NIMC wants USSD code method of verification stopped.
This implies few things.

Firstly, That Nigerian will be asked to go for a personal registration in offices across the nation

Secondly, Requirement of #1000 naira registration fees as it happens in some part of the country

Thirdly, Each network provider as the USSD has been cancelled might lead to a termination of service and there would be no gain from such cooperation.

This new development on the cancellation of USSD, has been causing confusion among phone users who find it hard to understand what the NIMC was trying to say.

There was no sufficient succinct information about what the USSD and verification charges are contained in the statement.

As of now, Airtel and MTN users, for example, are using *121# and *785# respectively as USSD to link their SIM cards with their NIN. Other service providers also have their USSD codes for the linking and for all it’s worth, it’s still working.

“Also, people who have lost their NIN slip are also told to dial *346# to see their National Identity Number. “

Nigerians are asking different questions as to what is the modus operandi for this impromptu registration and verification as it brings stress and lots of misinformation

On this note, the FG needs to make this message clear so that people can understand the message being passed across.

Here Is The Press Statement:

Extension of Registration Period and Cancellation of USSD and Verification Fees

The National Task Force on National Identification Number (NIN) and Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) Registration met today, 21st December, 2020.
